voice of reasoning? voice of confusion? or that silent,solemn voice of El ?
Option 3 it is. This was a reflection - and justification to an unseen audience - of the choices the author had to make, and his reason for those choices. This also reflects the inner struggle that often occurs with this voice, so that the real question is often "to heed or not to heed?".
